If you’re an author who’s been told they should blog as part of your book marketing strategy but wonder how you’ll find the time or come up with ideas, you’re not alone. We’ve listed five indie author blog topics (and some subtopic ideas)  that are popular with readers so you’ll have an idea of where to start. You can also share some of these ideas as social media posts!

These are the topics your audience wants to learn more about. They’re also natural for you to write about because they come from your experience, speak to your community, and maybe you’re even passionate about them! This all makes it easier to get inspired to start speaking directly to your audience via your author blog!

This one isn’t just about promotional updates. Readers want to know more about your book. If you’re a fiction writer, they like reading about your characters, your choices, the inspiration behind your book, and more. Fans want to get to the story behind the story. So, besides just updating your audience on where you’re at in your latest novel, or your book launch date, you can blog about things like:

  • What you left out of your book and why
  • A character’s backstory that they didn’t read about in your book
  • How you came up with your character names
  • What inspired you to write your book
  • The setting

There are probably other indie author blog topics you’ll come up with once you start writing too! You can also always check out the blogs of other authors in your genre to see what they’re blogging about.

2) Another Great Blog Topic for Authors is Other Books in Your Genre

Because your readers are likely reading other books in your genre, or want to, and are fans of the genre itself, writing about this topic can draw in your audience. This indie author blog topic can work for authors of most genres. You could:

  • Write about your love for the genre
  • Review favorite books in your genre
  • Tell readers how the genre inspired you or why you love it
  • Speculate on what’s coming for the genre or what you want to see
  • Do some research on a leading author in your genre and share what you’ve learned

Believe it or not, your readers, and even aspiring writers in your genre, love to learn about your process. Knowing how much work you put into your book, and how you managed to get it out into the world is a popular indie author blog topic because it makes you more relatable and demystifies the work behind being an author. Some ideas for writing on this topic could include:

  • What a typical writing day looks like for you
  • The tools you use for organization, assistance, and motivation
  • Your struggles through the editing process
  • The book cover design process
  • How you planned your book launch
  • Shout out to those who helped you along the way
  • Working with beta readers
  • Share photos of your workspace and your writing rituals
  • Tell your audience about what inspires you

This is another blog topic for indie authors of all genres. If you’re a fiction writer you could talk about a recent movie in your genre. Did your book require a lot of research? You could share some of what you learned while researching your historical fiction novel, your sci-fi epic, or even your self-help book. You could also write about:

  • How your research sparked new interests
  • Ways your book relates to contemporary or past events
  • Movies you’ve liked that share similar themes with your book
  • Courses or classes you’ve taken that you recommend
  • Facts about the setting, the time period, or themes of your book

These are all indie author blog topics that can resonate with your readers and pique the interest of a potential new audience. So if you feel inspired to share something different, consider writing about some of the things on this list.

5) Writing About Your Community Builds Connection and Engagement

Remember, your indie author blog is for your audience. Your goal is to speak directly to them, and what better way to do that than to write about your shared community?! Building community is a big part of building your author platform and it also creates a sense of belonging. And your fans are likely fans of the same things you are. When writing about community for your indie author blog, you could:

  • Interview other indie authors, or just write about what they’re doing and saying
  • Tell your audience about your favorite indie bookstore
  • Let your fans know about a TikTok, or other social account, you follow
  • Write an appreciation post for your fans, or interview them about what they’re reading, etc.
  • Have your audience ask you questions and then answer them in a blog

Just when you thought as an indie author you had nothing to blog about! We think some of these popular and engaging blog topic ideas could inspire you to start engaging with your audience and giving this time-tested book marketing strategy a try. What do you think?
